Homeowners looking to keep their homes cool this summer may be surprised to find out that the design of their roof plays a large role in the overall comfort of their living space. That’s according to an article from The Dallas Morning News, which looks at options homeowners can take to make their roofs more energy efficient, keeping your home more comfortable and saving money long term.
A “cool roof” can not only help to lower your energy bills, but it can also put less strain on your AC unit, helping it to last longer. According to the article, an energy efficient roof can run 50 degrees cooler than a traditional roof in the summer and reduce energy use by 27%.
One way to achieve a “cool roof” is by undergoing a full roof replacement. For those not ready to do that, incorporating spray foam insulation on the underside of your roof creates an airtight barrier between the roof and the attic, ensuring that hot air stays out and cool air stays in. According to Jace Wright, project manager for Frisco-based Frame Restoration Roofing & Construction, attics with spray foam can stay cooler than temperatures outside on hot summer days.
For this reason, Wright calls spray foam insulation “the most effective by far” material for those looking to retrofit their roofs with comfort in mind.
