Before you spend thousands of dollars on a new HVAC system, there’s a smarter place to start. According to a recent USA Today report on home energy upgrades, experts are nearly unanimous: air sealing and attic insulation deliver the highest return on investment of any home energy improvement. 

The numbers don’t lie. The Environmental Protection Agency estimates that homeowners save an average of 15% on heating and cooling costs by air sealing their homes and adding insulation to attics, basements, and crawl spaces. For a household spending $2,000 a year on energy, that’s $300 back in the budget every single year. And according to Mitchel Dotson, owner of Indy Rooftops, a $3,000 attic insulation project typically pays for itself within three to five years, while also extending the life of both the roof and the HVAC system beneath it.
