A recent article from Good Housekeeping highlights the advantages that insulation has on not only keeping homeowners warm during the winter, but the added benefit it has on helping consumers save money on costly heating bills.
For homeowners that continually crank up their thermostat but still remain cold, it may be time to check your home’s insulation needs. The article notes that heat can escape through a home’s attic, walls, and any other air leaks that may exist.
Homeowners looking to keep warm and strengthen their home’s building envelope should consider installing an unvented attic, which is created by using air impermeable insulation, like spray foam insulation, on the underside of the roof deck to seal the attic. By doing this, it brings any ductwork or heating, ventilating, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems inside “conditioned space.” Unlike traditional insulation methods, spray foam creates a seamless, airtight, water-resistant barrier that effectively seals the attic space and minimizes the risk of warm air escaping.
The article also notes that incentives, such as those made possible by the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA), allow homeowners the ability to enhance their properties. Specifically, the 25C tax credit program enables homeowners to receive up to $1,200 to help alleviate some of these initial insulation installation costs. According to the article, insulation investments usually pay for themselves in a matter of years once the savings in energy costs are realized.
As winter weather continues to sweep across the U.S., homeowners should look to spray foam insulation as a common-sense solution to keep their home warm and save money while doing so.
